Rioters chase doctors away from dying patients at Tshepong hospital

Critically ill patients lay unattended as “tsotsis” denied staff access to Tshepong hospital outside Klerksdorp in the North West on Wednesday and asked doctors to pay R20 to enter their workplace.

Desperate doctors and nurses were eventually flown in by helicopter. But strikers then entered the hospital and forced the nurses to go outside, while overturning rubbish bins. Patients ended up serving patients.

Mahikeng Provincial Hospital – Ill patient ignored and sent home in a wheelbarrow

The corridors of the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital ring hollowly. There is no staff in sight, except for two security guards patrolling each ward entrance. Inside one of the wards, the powder-blue walls are littered with notices apologising to patients about the interruption of health services.

In the “chronic medical” ward, Ntombizodwa Matthews lies on one of the beds, wearing an ANC-branded T-shirt and jeans. Her sister, husband and neighbour are at her bedside.

Union stops its nurses from escorting patients

The provincial branch of the Democratic Nursing Organisation of SA (Denosa) is stopping its members from escorting patients from one health care facility to another.
